The Sultanate of Sulu was established in 1450. In 1658 (or 1603) it acquired much of present Sabah from the
Sultanate of Brunei.
In 1885 the territory in Sabah was ceded to the British North Borneo Company. The Sultanate of Sulu successfully resisted attempts by the Spanish Philippines to annex it. The Spanish-American War of 1898 resulted in the cession of the Philippines by Spain to the U.S.; the Sultan of Sulu signed a treaty with the U.S. which turned Sulu into a U.S. protectorate. In 1936 Sultan Jamal ul Kiram II. ceded his powers to the U.S. Alternative spellings : Sulu, Sooloo Timeline : Sulu |
