First posted on December 28th 2009, last revised on May 11th 2010

Surakarta emerged from the partition of the Sultanate of Mataram in 1755,l the other part being Yogyakarta. Its present borders were determined largely in consequence of the Java War 1825-1830, in the course of which the Dutch East Indies annexed large stretches of territory.
The Sultanate of Yogyakarta was able to maintain a degree of political autonomy throughout colonialism. Since 1949 part of the Republic of Indonesia.
