Ayutthaya Luang Prabang

Prior to the 14th century much of the territory of modern Laos formed part of the Khmer Empire. From 1353 to 1707 the region was under the control of the Kingdom of Lan Xang. In 1707 it was split in three, the Kingdoms of Luang Prabang, Viang Chan (Vientiane) and Champassak. During this period of partition, Siam attempted to extend its suzerainty over the Laotian kingdoms. In 1893 France established a protectorate over Laos, which was integrated into French Indochina.
The period from 1707 to 1893 is called "the Dark Ages of Laos" (Wikipedia). European sources of the 18th and 19th century do refer to a Kingdom of Lawhos / Laos throughout the 18th and into the 19th century, such sources are listed below.
