The Dutch expeditions into the Indian Ocean began in 1596; in 1602 the Vereenigde Oostindische Comnpagnie (V.O.C.) was established
as a company holding the monopoly (within the Dutch Republic) for trade east of the Cape of Good Hope.
The V.O.C. capital in Batavia (Java) was established in 1619. The Portuguese were expelled
from Ambon (Moluccas) in 1605, Malacca was taken from them in 1641,
Ceylon in 1638/1658, Negapatnam (Coromandel) in 1657, in 1663 from Cochin (Malabar), in 1640.
Repeated efforts by the Dutch to take Goa, the capital of the Portuguese Indian Empire, failed. The V.O.C. established control over Taiwan (1624-1662, 1664-1668), over Mauritius (1638-1710) and the Cape Colony. (1652-1806). The V.O.C. is was a joint stock company operating a state under the protection of the Dutch Republic. As a joint stock company, its priority lay in gaining profit from its activities - trade (both European-Asian, and entrepot trade) and plantation economy (sugar on Taiwan, pepper, coffee on Java). Mauritius and the Cape Colony functioned as important hubs en route to and from the Dutch Republic. In order not to endanger trade interests, the V.O.C. strictly forbade any missionary activities in the territories under its control. The conclusion of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance in 1661 marks the end to the V.O.C.'s aggressive policy of expansion at the expense of the Portuguese and the Spanish. The loss of Taiwan in 1662 was a first significant setback; the French invasion of the Dutch Republic in 1672 terminated the latter's status as a great power and the beginning of a gradual decline. In the 1730es the E.I.C. outtraded the V.O.C. in Bengal; the French occupation of the Dutch Republic in 1795 and its transformation into the Batavian Republic - a French ally - meant that Britain was at war with the Dutch, and V.O.C. ships were legitimate prey. The V.O.C. declared bankrupcy, her assets formally taken over by the Batavian Republic. Following a transition period, in which the gems among the V.O.C. possessions were occupied by the British (Cape Colony 1795-1803, 1806-1815, Ceylon (1796-1815), Java (1811-1816), Ambon (Moluccas, 1810-1816)), Malacca (1795-1816), in 1816 the British returned Malacca, the Moluccas, Java and certain factories in Malabar and Bengal to the Netherlands, but held on to Ceylon and the Cape Colony. The Dutch possessions were organized as Nederlands-Indie, the Dutch East Indies (1816-1949).
