Surakarta | Dutch East Indies |
Yogyakarta emerged from the partition of the Sultanate of Mataram in 1755,l the other part
being Surakarta. Its present borders were determined largely in consequence of the
Java War 1825-1830, in the course of which the Dutch East Indies annexed large stretches of territory. The Sultanate of Yogyakarta was able to maintain a degree of political autonomy throughout colonialism. During the "Police Actions" 1948-1949 when the Dutch attempted to reimpose control over the islands, Indonesian leaders could use Yogyakarta as a refuge. Within the Republic of Indonesia, Yogyakarta retained special status. Spelling varieties : Yogyakarta, Jogjakarta, Jokjakarta, Jokjokarta, Djogjakarta, Djokjakarta, Djokjokarta, Dschokdschokarta, Yudschyakerta, Djocjokarta. To add to the large number of spelling varieties, the name "Mataram" (& spelling varieties) continued to be used into the 19th century. |
