Griqualand East, 1863-1897

The GRIQUA were descendants of Europeans and Hottentots. They spoke Afrikaans and had learned techniques from the Boers; in the late 18th century they had been evicted from the Cape Colony. A group of Griqua sold their lands in the Orange River Valley to Boers and migrated across the Drakensberg into land depopulated by the Zulus.
The territory they settled became known as GRIQUALAND EAST, with the capital KOKSTAD. They established a parliament called VOLKSRAAD. In 1878, Britain declared the area a protectorate; an 1879 rebellion was suppressed and the area annexed by the Cape Colony. Another insurrection in 1897 was defeated, the Griqua nation disbanded.
