1939-1948 History of Southern Africa Republic
1961-1994

The Union of South Africa, 1948-1961

In 1948, DANIEL F. MALAN, leader of the NATIONAL PARTY, was Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa; under him the APARTHEID REGIME began. Every segment of society was segregated, from education down to public rest rooms.
In the post-war years, South Africa saw an increase in European immigration. Economically, the country developed from the post-war boom. Internationally, South Africa was respected by the west for it's staunch anti-communist stand.
In the late 1950es, when public attention focussed on decolonization, the South African Apartheid system came under criticism.
In 1961, South Africa proclaimed the REPUBLIC.
