For the country's history since 1910, see also History of South Africa

In 1824, Shaka, king of the Zulu, ceded a stretch of coastal area to the British that year. The British proceeded to establish Port Natal (Durban); settlement began in 1835. In 1837, Boers entered the interior of what was to become Natal. After their leader Piet Retief and a number of his men had been massacred at the order of the Zulu chief Dingane, the Boers defeated the Zulu in the Battle of Blood River (1838).
The Boers expelled the British and established the Republic of Natalia, capital Pietermaritzburg, in 1838; it was conquered by the British in 1842 and annexed in 1843; most of the Boers emigrated into the Orange or Vaal river regions. The British administration took up residence in Pietermaritzburg.
British Natal was, until 1856, governed as an outlying part of the Cape Colony. Immigration was encouraged; from the 1860es onward, Indians immigrated.
In 1879-1887, British troops from Natal, despite losing the Battle of Isandlhwana (1879), conquered Zululand. It was annexed by Britain in 1887, but remained a separate entity until it was integrated into Natal in 1897.

In 1893, Natal was given self-government. In 1897, Zululand was incorporated into Natal.
In 1893, Mohandas K. Gandhi arrived in Durban, soon beginning his campaign for an improved status of the Indians living in the colony.
During the Boer War (1899-1902), Natal was the target of a number of Boer raids; Ladysmith was taken under siege, but held out. In 1900, the Boer republics were occupied by British forces.
In 1910, Natal joined the Orange Free State, Transvaal and the Cape in forming the Union of South Africa.

Within the Union of South Africa (1910-1961) respectively the Republic of South Africa (1961-1994), Natal formed the Province of Natal. In 1991 KwaZulu (a number of patches of territory scattered throughout Natal) was created a semi-independent homeland ("Bantustan") for the Zulu.

Since 1994
In 1994 South Africa's Apartheid Policy was abolished. KwaZulu was fully integrated into the province of Natal, the name of which was changed to KwaZulu-Natal.
