Portugal in World War II, 1939-1945



The Portuguese dictatorship (President CARMONA, Prime Minister and strongman SALAZAR) was sympathizing with the Axis powers, yet remained neutral. In 1940 a CONCORDAT was signed with the Vatican.
Lisbon became the end of a route of refugees who, from Vichy France crossed Falangist Spain in the hope of finding passage to America.
While sticking to it's policy of neutrality, in 1943 Portugal granted Britain the right to establish a naval base on the AÇORES ISLANDS.
