Byzantine Invasion
and Visigothic Expansion

The Kingdom of the Suevi in Galicia, 409-580

In 409, the SUEVI, together with other migrating barbaric peoples, crossed the Rhine and settled down in Roman Spain, establishing their new kingdom. In 428 the VANDALS left (V)Andalusia heading for Adrica. The Suevi dominated Spain until they were defeated by the VISIGOTHS in 480 and reduced to GALICIA, where they held on to their independence for another 100 years.
In the 550es, the hitherto Arian Suevi were concerted to Catholicism by MARTIN DE BRAGA. The Kingdom was conquered by the Visigoths under King LEOVIGILD, who restored the ARIAN CHURCH. However, his son RECCARED in 589 converted to Catholicism, and with him the Visigoth nation.
