The Gambia, 1919-1939



In 1923 Armitage School was established at Georgetown, intended to provide rudimentory education for the sons of Gambian chieftains. In 1928, the Bathurst Trade Union was established; the first strike was held in 1929. Bathurst Urban District Council was established in 1931 (renamed Urban Town Council in 1935); the first African member of the Legislative Council appointed in 1932. 1933 saw the reorganization of the protectorate's government system.
In 1936, The Gambia had a population of 198,000 (Hübner); Bathurst a population of 14,370. Gambia had a combined lngth of 12 km of railroad lines, 1260 km of country roads, 174 trucks and 248 busses (as of 1937), 64 km of telegraph lines (land) and 184 km of telephone lines, with 92 connected telephones (as of 1935).
Government revenues for 1935 amounted to 245,485 Pound Sterling, expenses at 194,669 Pound Sterling.
