1939-1974 History of West Africa

Guinea Bissau since 1974

In 1974 Portuguese Guinea (as GUINEA BISSAU) and in 1975 the Cape Verde Islands declared independence from Portugal. The PAIGC, which had organized resistance against Portuguese rule in both colonies, remained the only political organization in both states until the union was dissolved in 1980.
LUIS DE ALMEIDA CABRAL, brother of Amilcar (assassinated 1973) became the first president of Guinea Bissau. The one=party-state was replaced by multiparty democracy in 1991; President JOAO BERNARDO VIEIRA (since 1980) was able to hold on to power in elections. He was ousted by a coup in 1999.
