1821-1847 History of West Africa Liberia

Liberia Independent, 1847-1880

The newly independent republic was administrated by the English-speaking American Liberians; the new state, in many aspects, looked upon the United States as a model.
in 1848 annexion of the territory on the Gallinas; in 1852 annexion of the territory on the Cassa. In 1857 unification with the Republic of Maryland. In 1880 annexion of the Kingdom of Medina (Meyers).
Attempts to modernize the economy lead to an increase in foreign debt. From 1871 onward, the young republic faced difficulties paying it's foreign debts; that year the government was ousted in a coup d'etat. Liberia continued to expand inland.
