Liberia 1939-1960



In 1942, Liberia signed a defensive treaty with the U.S. In 1943, the British West African currency was replaced by the US Dollar. In January 1944, Liberia declared war on Japan and Germany. It became a founding member of the United Nations. President WILLIAM V.S. TUBMAN served from 1943 to 1971, providing the nation with political stability. Especially in the war years, with American aid the nation's infrastructure was improved.
