Portuguese Guinea 1939-1975

In 1941the capital was moved from Bolama to Bissau. The Salazar dictatorship continued beyond World War II into the 1970es. Unlike the French, British and Belgians, Portugal was unwilling to grant independence, or even political representation, to it's colonies. When most African colonies'overseas territories gained independence in 1957/1964, Portugal stubbornly held on to it's colonial empire.
Portuguese Guinea in 1951 was declared an overseas territory, in 1961 an overseas province. AMILCAR CABRAL organized the PAIGC, which began a guerilla war in 1961. The guerillas received assistance from the communist bloc, as well as from neighbouring Guinea.
In 1974, a coup d'etat ended the rightist dictatorship in Portugal, Guinea Bissau had already declared independence in 1973.
