Part of a series of historical dictionaries on individual countries, published by Scarecrow Press; scholarly. Compiled for libraries and historians.
The book tries to cover both the (larger) Austrian Empire and the (smaller) Republic of Austria. It contains an 11 page chronology, a 32 page account of Austrian history, the dictionary section lists 231 entries on 226 pages, followed by a 42 page bibliography
Entries do include historical terms, in part in German, in part in English translation, some referring to the larger Habsburg monarchy, some to the territory of the Republic of Austria. A good number of entries contain biographies of famous Austrians.
This English-English dictionary provides a wealth of concise information. It might be even more useful if entries were not merely listed either in their original German spelling or in their English translation, but cross references under Österreichische Volkspartei, for example, would direct the reader to Austrian People's Party. The entry Seven Weeks War mentions the Battle of Königgrätz, and gives the Czech name of the site - Hradec Kralove.
