Having spent 5 years of his young life in California, he has good command of the English language. Planning to study biology at university, he took on a history research topic which is related to his area of interest.
As Chang Whan speaks Korean and English, his research topic was limited to English-speaking countries. His research required him to develop an understanding of the socio-political and intellectual history of the English-speaking countries in the later 19th century.
Yea, Chang Whan had about a year to work on his research paper. He used the school library, internet sources, ordered a number of books from antiquarian booksellers abroad, and visited two academic libraries here in Korea. Printed out, it is 30 pages long, single space. Yea, Chang Whan provides a solid overview, names the supporters and opponents of Darwin's theory in the various English-speaking countries where 'On the Origin of Species' was published, and describes what direction the discussion took once it went beyond the correct/incorrect phase. His paper is well-organized, based on solid sources, written from a neutral perspective. It compares to a third year college seminar presentation and serves as a solid basis for a discussion of the historical reception of Darwinism.

 September 21st 2007

Alexander Ganse

 Yea, Chang Whan

The Reception of Darwinism and the Concept of Evolution by the Religious Community in the English-Speaking World, 1859-1930
