Outstanding Papers of Fall 2010 : |
Overall Best Paper :
13th waver Song, Jeeun, A Dissection of the National Historiography of Kazakhstan
13th waver Song, Jeeun wrote her research paper in his senior year; she took Mr. Ganse's class for 5 semesters in a row.
Kazakhstan, the world's 9th largest country, gained its independence only in 1991, was formed as an administrative unit only in the 1920s. It is named after the Kazakhs, a traditionally nomadic people; the country is multiethnic; during the last century prior to independence the Russian ethnicity has played a dominant role. The Historiography of Kazakhstan thus is young and still in flux. Song, Jeeun liked to take on challenges. The WHKMLA country index page on Kazakhstan provided her with a host of links to sources on the history of the country, but primary sources on the historiography of Kazakhstan, such as school textbooks on history, she had to find for herself. These books were in Russian language. Apart from history, Song, Jeeun is interested in linguistics. In the process of her research she proved confidence, a can-do-attitude in the face of many obstacles. The result is an interesting and amusing read.
Best Paper of a Student New to Mr. Ganse's History Class :
13th waver Chae, Seung Hoon, Historiography of Singapore
Chae, Seung Hoon wrote this paper while taking Mr. Ganse's history class for the 2nd semester in a row.
The WHKMLA country index page on Singapore provided him with a host of links to sources on the history of the country, but primary sources on the historiography of Singapore, such as school textbooks on history, he had to find for himself. Like Kazakhstan, Singapore is a young, multiethnic nation. When traveling to Singapore to participate in a debate tournament, he purchased two Singaporean high school history textbooks (both in English). While the searching and reading part was less of a challenge compared to the Kazakhstan paper, for a student in his first year of history class the analysis section is an outstanding accomplishment.
14th waver Yoon, Jaewon, The Image of Attila in Legend, Movie and Historiography
Yoon, Jaewon never took one of Mr. Ganse's regular history classes and had little background in history when she enrolled in Historiography Seminar. So she was given the abovelisted topic, in the hope that she might manage. Not only did she fulfill expectations, but her presentations in the seminar and the following discussions she guided were among the most memorable in my career as a history teacher.
