Why we are called "Emil-Thoma...." |

| On July 14th, 1920, the Council of Freiburg decided to give the building in the Oberwiehre (local part of Freiburg) the name of "Emil-Thoma-Realschule" on the occasion of the coming event of the 800th anniversary. Dr. Emil-Thoma was born in Krensheim near Tauberbischofsheim on May 29th, 1854. He attended the Gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim and he studied law in Heidelberg and Freiburg. By this time he was already interested in the daily politcal affairs, but he preferred politics in the local community to the "great world politics". At the age of 30, he was already elected Mayor of Freiburg City. Although Emil Thoma was a realistic and responsible man, he was always open to serious music and art and he became the official adviser of the local theatre commision. |
A seat in the box of the theatre was as well a matter of course as musical practice with
in the family.
It might also be generally known that he was enthousiastic about hiking.
Who does not know the "Emil-Thoma-Footpath" named after him in the Black Forest?
In 1903, Emil Thoma was elected president of the Black Forest Hiking Club (Schwarzwaldverein).
With his sense for the essentials he was deeply engaged in the protection of nature - at those
times no matter of fact at all!
He was elected unanimously Mayor of Freiburg on May 1913 and obtained
all of the 106 given votes.
