War between Pope Sixtus IV. and Florence

Pope Sixtus IV. knew of the conspiracy lead by Cardinal Rafael Riario against the Medici in Florence; when the plot failed and the Republic of Florence undertook steps to punish the conspirators, Sixtus IV. placed the Republic under the interdict.
Between 1485 and 1486 the Republic of Florence and Pope Sixtus IV. were at war.
Pope Sixtus IV.' foreign policy - he had planned to acquire Ferrara for a nepote - was obviously steered by family interests; he lacked the support of allies, while his opponents teamed up and finally forced him to abandon his ambitions.
