1958-1961 1970-1990

Syria, 1961-1970

Politics The UAR was dominated by Egypt. A military coup in Damascus dissolved it and restored Syrian independence. Another military coup happened in 1963; a Baath administration was formed, the state of emergency declared. Further coups would take place in 1966 and 1970, part of a factional struggle within the baath Party.

Foreign Policy During the Cold War, Syria was perceived to be in the Soviet camp; the USSR was Syria's major arms supplier. Traditional rivalry with the Baath administration in Iraq continued. In 1967 Syria, in alliance with Jordan and Egypt, fought Israel in the 6 Days War. Israeli forces occupied the Golan Heights, an area they still hold on to.

The Economy was largely controlled by the state. The population of Syria rose from an estimated 4.6 million in 1961 to 6.3 million in 1970 (census).
