Cyprus since 1989



On and off negotiations between representatives of the Greek south and the Turkish north of the island over the island's future continued. In 1998, the EU declared Cyprus (as a whole) to be a candidate for accession. Hopes that this would be an incentive for the Turkish north to enter into a federation did not materialize. In 2004 the Republic of Cyprus (in effect only the southern part) became a full member of the EU; the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remains unrecognized except by the Republic of Turkey.
In 2003, Greek and Turkish Cypriots for the first time since 1974 were permitted to cross the Green Line.
