Bukovina since 1919



The dissolution of Austria-Hungary began in October 1918. The Ruthenian population of the Northern Bukovina opted for integration into the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (Nov. 1918); the Moldavian population of Southern Bukovina, as well as the Bukovina's German community, opted for integration into Romania. The entire Bukovina was annexed by Romania (Treaty of St. Germain). Romanian was introduced as sole language of administration, jurisdiction and education. In 1924, Romania passed centralization legislation; the Bukovina, was reduced in status to a Romanian province. From 1918 to 1928 and from 1937 to 1940 the Bukovina was placed under martial law; the Ukrainian Orthodox Church the subject of repression.
In 1940, Stalin demanded Romania to cede the northern Bukovina to the USSR; Romania complied. Almost the entire German population of the Bukovina emigrated into the Reich. When German troops invaded the USSR in 1941, Romania reannexed the northern Bukovina; in 1944 the Red Army liberated the northern Bukovina, which in 1947 formally was reannexed into the USSR / Ukrainian SSR. During World War II, the Jewish community of the Bukovina was destroyed by the Germans.
