Kenya Independent, since 1963



Kenyan independence was declared in 1963, the REPUBLIC in 1964, JOMO KENYATTA it's first president (until 1978). Kenyatta's long presidency provided the country with stability, and Kenya long was regarded black Africa's most promising economy. Kenyatta ruled autocratically; some opposition parties were outlawed in 1969, a ONE-PARTY-STATE established in 1974. The KIKUYU are the dominating population element in the state. In 1978 Kenyatta was succeeded by DANIEL ARAP MOI, who also rules in autocratic style; after a democratic experiment the one-party-state was reintroduced in 1987.
Kenya is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. During the years of the Cold War, it followed a non-aligned foreign policy. The East African Currency Union was dissolved in 1966, when Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania established national currencies. An attempt to harmonize the economies of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika/Tanzania was made with the establishment of the EAST AFRICAN COMMISSION (1961), upgraded to the EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY in 1967. However, due to different political philosophies and internal strife, it did stop to function in 1972 and disintegrated in 1977.

Since 1960, the country's population has more than tripled. Consequences are a vast growth of the cities (shantytowns), wide-spread poverty, extension of farmland at the expense of the habitats of wild animals. Another problem is AIDS.
One of Kenya's major sources of income is tourism (SAFARI). Kenya has established wildlife reservations which are major tourist attractions.
