The Mystics : Joan of Arc

JEANNE D'ARC, the MAID OF ORLEANS (La Pucelle, Joan of Arc, 1412-1431) claimed to experience revelations from age 13 onward (1425). Convinced that she was god's messenger on earth, in 1428 she went to Charles VII., who at that time was in control of only the southern parts of his Kingdom of France. The girl of now age 16 made such an impression, that her advice overruled that of experienced generals and politicians - France was in the middle of the 100 Years War, and the English were in control of Paris. Joan was given command; unexpectedly, the French were victorious, the English defeated, and Charles crowned King of France in the cathedral of Reims (1429). St. Joan was captured by the English, tried as a witch at Rouen and burnt at the stake.
Revered in France, she was canonized in 1920, a symbol of the French will to repel invasions.
