The Duchy of Silesia was part of the Holy Roman Empire since 1146. It later was split into a number of duchies; since 1335/1346 Silesia was regarded one of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. In 1526 the Habsburg Dynasty acquired Silesia. In 1742, Austria ceded most of Silesia to Prussia; the remnants Austria held on to were hence referred to as Austrian Silesia.
