In 1576 the County of Zollern was partitioned in Zollern-Sigmaringen, Zollern-Hechingen and Zollern-Haigerloch. In 1767, Zollern-Sigmaringen acquired Zollern-Haigerloch. In the 19th century the name Hohenzollern came to replace Zollern. In 1849, Prussia acquired both Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Hohenzollern-Hechingen; in 1850 the Province of Hohenzollern was formed.
