The Diocesis of Konstanz was established in 585 and dissolved in 1821. The term "Hochstift Konstanz" describes the territory within the Holy Roman Empire which the Bishop of Konstanz ruled as a territorial prince. It existed as such from 1217 to 1803, was part of the Swabian Circle since 1512, remained Catholic during the Reformation, and was annexed by Baden in 1803. In 1757, the Prince-Abbey of Reichenau, hitherto immediate, was annexed. Since the city of Konstanz was outside of their territory, the Princebishops resided in Meersburg.
