The Hochstift (Princebishopric) of Augsburg emerged as an autonomous entity in the Holy Roman Empire in the 13th century.
The city of Augsburg gained the status of a free Imperial city (or immediate city) in 1276.
In the 15th century, the bishops moved their residence to Dillingen; the Domkapitel (cathedral chapter) stayed on in Augsburg.
During the Reformation, the Hochstift remained Catholic. It was part of the Swabian Circle since 1512.
In 1551 Dillingen University was established, first administrated by Dominicans, then by Jesuits.
In 1803 the Hochstift Augsburg was
annexed by Bavaria. Within Bavaria, the Hochstift Augsburg became part of Regierungsbezirk Schwaben.
