The Diocese of Eichstätt was established in 741. In the Middle Ages the Bishops of E. acquired territory,
which as Hochstift E. gained political autonomy within the Holy Roman Empire. The Hochstift Eichstätt
was a secular political entity, and is not to be confused with the (much larger) Diocese of E. In 1500/1512, Hochstift Eichstätt was allocated to the Franconian Circle. The Reformation made considerable progress in the Hichstift Eichstätt, until Bishop Johann Christoph von Westerstetten in 1614 introduced the Counterreformation. In 1803 the Hochstift Eichstätt was annexed by Bavaria. From 1806 to 1837, Eichstätt formed part of the Oberdonaukreis withion the Kingdom of Bavaria. Today, the District of E. forms part of Regierungsbezirk Oberbayern (Governmental District Upper Bavaria). Historical spellings : Aichstadt, Aichstädt, Eichstadt, Eichstätt |
