East Punjab since 1984


Administration : The (Indian) State of Punjab was administrated from 1985 to 1987, from 1997 to 2002 and since 2007 by an SAD-led government, from 1992 to 1995, from 1996 to 1997 and from 2002 to 2007 by an INC-led government, from 1995 to 1996 by a PCC-led government. From 1983 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1992, the Punjab was under president's rule.

Annals : 1983-1985 : presidents' rule
1984 : Prime Minister Indira Gandhi assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards
1985 : national government, SAD signed agreement according to which Chandigarh was to be allocated to Punjab, Hindi-speaking areas within Punjab ceded to Haryana; not implemented yet (BBoY 1986)
1985 : Sikh extremist violence continued (BBoY 1986)
1985 : state election held; SAD formed government
1986 : Sikh extremist violence continued (BBoY 1987)
1987 : Sikh extremist violence continued (BBoY 1988)
1987-1992 : presidents' rule
1988 : Sikh extremist violence continued (BBoY 1989)
1991 : upsurge of Sikh extremist violence in the Punjab (BBoY 1992)
1992 : state election held, INC formed government
1993 : "The threat of militancy in the Punjab has generally ebbed" (BBoY 1994)
1994 : "The situation in Punjab moved toward normalcy." Local elections held; various AD factions merged into single party (BBoY 1995)
1997 : state election held; SAD formed government
2002 : state election held; INC formed government
2007 : state election held; SAD formed government
2007 : clashes between militant Sikhs, police

Social History : In 1981 the population of (East) Punjab 16.6 million, in 1991 20.2 million, in 2001 24.2 million.
The Statesman's Yearbook, based on censi, gives the literacy rate of (East) Punjab in 2001 as 69.95 % (75.68 % for men). In 1991, 63 % of the population were Sikhs, 34.5 % Hindu, 1.5 % Muslim.
