Administration : The position of chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, from 1999 to 2002, was held by politicians from the BJP, from 2002 to 2003 and since 2003 by politicians from the BSP, in 2003 briefly by a politician from the SP.

2000 : Hindu-Muslim riots in Mau, eastern UP
2002 : state election; BSP formed government
2002 : Uttar Pradesh affected by drought
2005 : Hindu-Muslim riots in Mau, eastern UP
2005 : Jaunpur train bombing
2006 : Hindu-Muslim riot at Aligarh
2006 : Naxalite activity in UP (Mirzapur, Chandauli and Sonebhadra) increased
2007 : communal violence in Gorakhpur spread to neighbouring districts

Social History : In 2001 the population of Uttar Pradesh was 166 million.
