Bengal Province Burma
First posted on November 19th 2005, last revised on May 27th 2010

From 1228 to 1826 Assam was ruled by the Ahom Dynasty, western Assam until late into the 16th century by the Koch Dynasty. A Burmese invasion of Assam in 1824 caused the First Anglo-Burmese War 1824-1826, in the course of which Assam was annexed by the E.I.C. ( Bengal Presidency). It formed the eastern frontier of British India. In 1905, the Province of East Bengal and Assam was separated from Bengal Presidency. This partition of Bengal met strong opposition, and in 1912 East Bengal and Assam was dissolved; now the Province of Assam was formed (including present-day Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sylhet District). In 1937 Assam got its own parliament and chief minister.
When British India was released into independence, Assam joined the Republic of India, except for Sylhet district which became part of East Pakistan (present Bangla Desh).
In 1955 Nagaland became a Union Territory. In 1971 Meghalaya was separated from Assam; in 1972 Mizoram.
