In 1765 the Mughal Empire formally ceded Bengal (with Bihar and Orissa) to the E.I.C. (Bengal Presidency). In 1912 the Province of Bihar and Orissa was separated from Bengal; in 1936 the Province of Orissa was separated from Bihar and Orissa. In the tradition to independence, the Province of Orissa absorbed 24 princely states (among others Athmalik, Bamra, Boudh, Banaili, Dashapalla, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Pal Lahara, Sonepur, Talcher). Orissa in 1950 was one of the founding states of the Republic of India.
