Prehistory
Relics dating back to 20,000 B.P. have been found.

600 BCE-750 CE
Early Indian oral literature mentions Bengal. Vanga (c.500 BCE) is believed to have been an early coastal kingdom engaged in seafaring and trade. At the time of Alexander the Great (326 BCE), the Kingdom of Gangaridai is ascribed similar characteristics. Temporarily, Bengal was under the Gupta Dynasty; the Buddhist missionaries Ashoka (c. 200 BCE) dispatched to South East Asia may well have sailed from Bengali ports. From 590 to 626 CE, the Gauda Dynasty ruled in Bengal.

750-1174
Bengal was Buddhist Kingdom under the Pala Dynasty.

1170-1234
Bengal was Hindu Kingdom under the Sena Dynasty.

1234-1352
Bengal was Hindu Kingdom under the Deva Dynasty.

1352-1576
Bengal was an independent Muslim Sultanate.

1576-1717
Bengal was a province of the Mughal Empire.

1717-1757
In 1717, the Nawab of Bengal was elevated from Mughal vassall to sovereign prince.

1757-1947
In 1757-1765, the East India Company acquired Bengal (with Bihar and Orissa). In the years until 1857 the E.I.C. quickly expanded the area under direct rule; the Punjab, Hindustan (the Gangetic plain) and Assam were, as Bengal Presidency, administrated from Fort William (= Calcutta). In the first decades, British rule met resistance; around 1770 Bengal experienced a major famine. As the E.I.C. banned missionary activity, English missionary William Carey established the Danish enclave of Serampore as the center of Indic studies; it grew into the University of Calcutta and contributed to the Bengal Renaissance. The Sepoy Rebellion 1857-1858 caused the bankrupcy of the E.I.C.; her assets in India were taken over by the British crown. In order to create provinces of roughly similar size and population, the British authorities in 1905 split Bengal in two, merging East Bengal with Assam. The measure was widely opposed, and in 1911 the status quo ante was restored. In 1913 Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
In 1943, Bengal experienced a major famine.

since 1947
In 1947 British colonial rule ended. Bengal was split into West Bengal, which became a state within the Union (since 1950 : Republic) of India, and East Bengal, which together with the hitherto Assamese Sylhet District became East Pakistan. In 1971 East Pakistan seceded from Pakistan to form independent Bangladesh. In the course of the three Indo-Pakistani Wars, Hindu refugees left Bengal to settle in adjacent regions of India, while Muslim refugees fled from adjacent regions in India into Bangladesh.
