Monarchy established in 1642. In the 18th century exposed to repeated invasions from Nepal. Independence from the latter established when Sikkim became an ally of the E.I.C. in the Gurkha War 1814. Had to cede Darjeeling to the E.I.C. (Bengal Presidency) in 1835. In 1888 British troops had to take action against invaders from Tibet. Sikkim maintained her independence until 1975, when it joined the Republic of India. The monarchy was abolished in 1982.
