Historic kingdom located in the hills to the east of Bengal. Said to have had its climax in the 14th to 15th century; listed in many western 18th century sources as a country of little commercial interest. The monarchy was abolished and Tripura was annexed by the Union of India in 1949. Given status of a union territory in 1963, of a state in 1972.
