Biel was granted the status of a city in 1275, still under the rule of the Prince-bishop of Basel.
In 1279 Biel entered into an alliance with Bern (to liberate itself from the rule of the
Prince-bishop of Basel). In 1352 Biel became an ally of the
Swiss Confederation. The Protestant Reformation was introduced in 1528.
In 1798 Biel lost its sovereignty and was annexed into the Canton of Bern (Helvetic Republic). Biel, in French Bienne, is bilingual. Historical Atlas, Switzerland Page |
