This page deals with the Duchy of Limburg (until 1795), not with the later Dutch respectively
Belgian provinces by that name. Territorial History . The County of Limburg was founded in the 11th century. From 1128 onward, the rulers of Limburg used the title Duke of Limburg. In 1289 the Duchy of Limburg fell to the Duke of Brabant. In 1406 Duke Philip the Bold of Burgundy purchased Limburg; in 1430 Brabant also fell to Burgundy. Limburg ruled other adjacent Brabant possessions, the Land of Valkenburg, the County Dalhem and the Land of 's-Hertogenrade, which were combined to form the Land van Overmaas. In 1495 the Burgundian Netherlands fell to the Habsburg Dynasty. In 1556 the Habsburg Netherlands fell to Spain. During the Dutch Revolt, Spain held on to Limburg and the Landen van Overmaas; since 1632 the nearby city of Maastricht was held by the Dutch Republic. In 1661 part of the Landen van Overmaas (County Dalhem, Land van 's-Hertogenrade) were ceded to the Dutch Republic; Limburg (with the bulk of the Landen van Overmaas) remained part of the Spanish Netherlands until 1713, when it became part of the Austrian Netherlands. In 1795, the Duchy of Limburg and the Landen van Overmaas were annexed by France. The historic territory of Limburg (with Landen van Overmaas) presently is divided between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany (NRW). Within Belgium, the historic territory of the Duchy of Limburg (with Landen van Overmaas) is divided among the provinces Limburg (Region Flanders) and Liege (Wallonia). Terminology . In 1473 the regional assemblies of Limburg and the Landen van Overmaas merged to form the Staten van Limburg en Overmaas. In publicationd of the 18th century, frequently the name 'Limburg' is applied for the cmbined territory. Administrative History . The Duchy of Limburg was divided in the bans Montzen, Baelen, Walhorn, Herve and Sprimont. The Landen van Overmaas consisted of the Land van Valkenburg (bans Meerssen, Klimmen, Beek, Heerlen and barony Eijsden), the County Dalhem (bans Cheratte, Trembleur, Voeren, Aubel, Olne, Dalhem, Cadier, Oost) and the Land van 's-Hertogenrade. Church History . The Duchy of Limburg was part of the Diocese of Liege. By the time the Dutch Republic took control of territory of the Landen van Overmaas, the Counterreformation had ensured that the local population was staunchly Catholic.
