First posted on December 3rd 2007, last revised on March 16th 2008

Within the Kingdom of the United Netherlands, the (united) Province of Limburg was created in 1816. In 1839 it was split into a Dutch and a Belgian province by that name. Under German occupation during World War I, in 1920 Germany ceded Eupen, Malmedy and Saint Vith, which, although not adjacent to Limburg, were annexed into the province. In 1932, Eupen, Malmedy and Saint Vith were detached from Limburg and annexed into the Province of Liege. In 1962, the community of Fourons was split from Liege and annexed into Limburg.
