First settled around 1500 B.C., the first European to find the island group (and to name them "New Caledonia") was James Cook in 1774.
In 1853 France took possession of the islands (Nouvelle Caledonie). The islands
gained economic importance because of their nickel and cobalt deposits. The mining industry attracted a significant population of
immigrant labour. A conflict between native Kanaks and the French administation became apparent in 1985; the Noumea Accord of
1998 attempted to settle the matter by granting the island group devolution. New Caledonia is still an integral part of the
