History and Administrative Division . Vologda Oblast was created in 1937, from territory previously belonging to Leningrad Krai and Severny Krai. As of 2008, it borders on Karelia Republic amd Arkhangelsk Oblast in the north, on Kirov Oblast in the east, on Nizhny Novgorod, Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Kalinin Oblast in the south, on Novgorod and Leningrad Oblast in the west. It is divided in 26 districts : Babayevsky, Babushsky, Belozersky, Chagodoshchensky, Cheropovetsky, Gryazovetsky, Kaduysky, Kharovsky, Kichmengsko-Gorodetsky, Kirilovsky, Mezhdurezhensky, Nikolsky, Nuyksensky, Sheksninsky, Sokolsky, Syamzhensky, Tarnogsky, Totemsky, Ust Kubinsky, Ustyuzhensky, Vashkinsky, Veliko Ustyugsky, Verkhovashsky, Vologodsky, Vozhegodsky, Vytegorsky. Population . The population was 1,662,300 in 1939, 1,308,000 in 1959, 1,310,000 in 1979, 1,354,000 in 1989, 1,311,300 in 2001 (Lahmeyer).
