V.O.C. Mataram
First posted on December 30th 2009, last revised on May 10th 2010

The Sultanate of Cirebon was established in the 15th century as a successor to the Kingdom of Sunda. In the early 16th century Cirebon was a center of spreading Islam. In 1662, the dynasty of Cirebon broke up in 4 separate lines, ruling from the kratons (palaces) of Kasepuhan, Kanoman, Kaprabonan and Kacirebonan. From 1677 to 1679, Cirebon was occupied by the Sultanate of Banten. Shortly after the withdrawal of Banten forces, in 1681 Cirebon signed a defensive alliance with the V.O.C. which in effect turned it into a V.O.C. protectorate. In 1819, the government of the Dutch East Indies formally abolished the Sultanate of Cirebon and annexed it as Residency of Cirebon.

Spelling varieties : Cirebon, Cheribon, Tjirebon, Tsieribon, Cherebon, Charabon
