History of Johor Aceh
First posted on December 25th 2004, last revised on May 3rd 2010

The city of Melaka (Malacca) from c.1400 was the capital of the Islamic Sultanate of Malacca, and the leading trade center on the Malacca Straits. In 1511 the city was conquered by the Portuguese; from 1511 onward the Sultans resided at Bintang (Riau) or Johor. Portuguese Malacca (1511-1641) was administratively part of Portuguese Asia, with its capital at Goa. In 1641 the V.O.C., in alliance with Johor, conquered the city. Malacca remained under V.O.C. administration until 1795. While Malacca was under British administration 1795-1802, the V.O.C. went bankrupt and the Batavian Republic took over its assets and claims. From 1802 to 1803 briefly administered by the Batavian Republic, from 1803 to 1818 Malacca again was under British military administration, from 1818 to 1825 under Dutch administration (Malacca being placed under the Dutch East Indies, capital Batavia). In 1824 the Netherlands ceded Malacca to Britain.
In 1826 Malacca became part of the Straits Settlements, together with Penang and Singapore; the Straits Settlements administratively were placed under Bengal Presidency of the E.I.C..
