The state historians refer to as the Sultanate of Mataram in 1570 emerged from the ruins of its predecessor, the
Sultanate of Demak. It became the dominant polity on the Island of Java, until it
disintegrated into the Sultanates of Surakarta and Yogyakarta
in 1755. Historians use the name Mataram to describe the combined polities of Surakarta and Yogyakarta until
into the 19th century. |
