First posted on December 22nd 2004, last revised on February 26th 2009

In 1842 Perlis was separated from the Sultanate of Kedah and established as a separate sultanate. Both Perlis and Kedah were vassals of the Kingdom of Siam. In 1909 Siam ceded Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Trengganu to Britain; Perlis from 1909 to 1946 was one of the so-called Unfederated Malay States.
In 1946 Perlis joined the Federation of Malaya (-1963), in 1963 Malaysia.
