The Sultanate of Pontianak (Western Kalimantan/Borneo) was established in 1771, by a son of the Sultan of Sukadana who had married a daughter of the ruler of Mempawah and who established Pontianak as center of piratical activity. In 1819 it was declared a protectorate of the Dutch East Indies. Pontianak became the capital of the D.E.I. administrative unit "Borneo Wester-Afdeling". In 1950 the sultanate was abolished, its territory annexed by the Republic of Indonesia.
