Bima Bali
First posted on January 13th 2010, last revised on May 11th 2010

Prior to the reuption of Mount Tambora (in 1815) the island was divided in 6 states : Sumbawa, Dompo, Sanggar, Bima, Tambora, Popekat. The last two polities seem to have been completely wiped out by the eruption; by 1847 there were 4 polities left - Sumbawa, Dompu, Sanggar and Bima.
Sumbawa signed a treaty recognizing Dutch sovereignty in 1905, Bima in 1886 and 1907/1908. Hence the island formed part of the Dutch East Indies

Alternate spellings/names : Sumbawa, Sumbahwa, Soembawa
