Liberia since 1960

By 1960, most of Liberia's neighbouring colonies have been released into independence. Liberia had a peculiar colonial structure, the country being dominated by the English-speaking element descending from freed American slaves of African origin, while the indigenous Africans had long been marginalized.
In 1980, SAMUEL K. DOE took power in a coup d'etat. The opposition was suppressed, many went into exile. Exile Liberians under CHARLES TAYLOR invaded in 1989; Liberia found itself at civil war. President Doe was assassinated. A regional peacekeeping force, ECOWAS, was dispatched. Only in 1996 did negotiations lead to disarmament and multiparty elections. The estimates for civil war dead range betweem 150,000 and 200,000.
