Mali History of West Africa Segou

Songhai, 15th-16th century

Although founded in the 8th century and converted to Islam ca. 1000, Songhai, a Kingdom on the middle Niger, did not rise to importance before King SONNI ALI in 1468 conquered TIMBUKTU from neighbouring Mali. For a century in control of the most important caravan route in the Western Sahara, Songhai flourished until raids by the Moroccans in the late 16th century; the Moroccans took Timbuktu and held on to it for centuries. Songhai disintegrated.
